The Difference between VRF and Central AC
VRF (variable refrigerant flow systems) and central air conditioners both utilize refrigerant filled coils to create a cooling effect. The process relies on a condenser unit, typically located outside, to transform the refrigerant from a gas to a liquid state. However, a conventional AC system requires a single fan coil unit and a blower system to distribute conditioned air by way of ductwork. A VRF includes several fan coils that allow customization of the amount of cooling provided to each zone of the house.
Advantages of a VRF system:
- Flexibility to suit all complexities of demands
- Cater to the the needs of individual rooms for zoned control
- Heat recovery from one zone to another
- Simultaneous heating and cooling possibility
- Lower heat losses and exceptionally energy efficiency
- No need for traditional ductwork
Advantages of central air conditioning:
- Less expensive to install than VRF
- Fewer maintenance requirements
- Takes up less space
- Quiet operation
- Compatible with current ductwork
